MESSAGES FROM THE MINBAR

Think Before You React

Think Before You React

Mufti Maruf Ahmed

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْم

Lately, Muslims have faced a lot of hatred, insults, or unfair treatment, whether in the news, online, or even in the streets. Some people try to make us angry or push us to react badly. But as Muslims, we must always remember: our actions represent our faith. Naturally, we will have a reaction. But we must ensure that our reaction is one sanctioned by Islam, not counter-productive.

Allah tells us in the Qur’an:

“And do not let the hatred of a people make you act unjustly. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.” (Surah al-Ma’idah, 5:8)

Our default reaction should not be to respond with violence or anything that goes against Islam, especially if this what the aggressors want.

When we see something offensive such as a hateful message, an insult to Islam, or even a far-right protest, our first feeling might be anger, and understandably so. But anger must be channelled correctly. Sometimes, it can make us forget what is halal and haram. It can lead to actions that harm us, our families, and the image of Islam.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The strong person is not the one who can fight, but the one who can control himself when angry.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Before reacting, stop and think:
• Is my response pleasing to Allah?
• Will this bring benefit, or more harm?
• Am I following the Prophet’s example, or my emotions?

Our duty is to act according to the teachings of the Qur’an and the Prophet ﷺ, and not emotion, not politics, and not pressure from others. We must be strategic and not act in haste.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Composure is from Allah, and haste is from shaytan.” (Tirmidhi)

As Muslims, in fact as humans, we must protect our religion, our families, our places of worship, and the areas we live in. However, the last thing we want is to lose our dignity when responding to the undignified.

May Allah protect us at all times.

Ameen.
