MESSAGES FROM THE MINBAR

Staying Firm as the World Changes
Mufti Maruf Ahmed
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْم
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“There will not come a time upon you except that the time after it will be worse than it.” (Bukhari)
This hadith reminds us that as time passes, the condition of people will become worse, not necessarily in wealth or comfort, but in faith, morals, and sincerity. People’s hearts will change. There will be more sin, less honesty, and fewer people who care about pleasing Allah.
We may see new technology, better houses, or faster cars, but what truly becomes worse is how people use their time and what they live for.
Do Not Blame Time
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not curse time, for indeed Allah is (the controller of) time.”
Many people complain and say, “The times have become bad.” But time itself does not change, but people do. The sun still rises and sets as it always has. It is the hearts of people that become harder and their priorities that become worldly.
Imam al-Shafi’i (ra) beautifully said:
“We blame our time, but the fault is within us; Our time has no fault except what we have done.”
His words remind us that instead of complaining about society, we should fix ourselves. Each believer is responsible for their own heart, their own actions, and their own connection with Allah.
Steadfastness
When people move away from the teachings of Islam, it becomes harder to hold on to faith.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There will come a time when holding onto one’s faith will be like holding onto hot coal.” (Tirmidhi)
Even though it is hard, it is also more rewarding. Every small effort to obey Allah, every prayer, every act of patience, is worth so much more when people around you forget Him.
This hadith does not mean that all is lost. Allah’s mercy is greater than any evil in the world. In every generation, Allah raises sincere believers who protect the truth and keep the light of Islam alive.
Allah says:
“So hold fast to what has been revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.” (Surah al-Zukhruf, 43:43)
Even when the world changes, the Qur’an remains the same. The sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ remains the same. Guidance is always there for the one who seeks it.
Widespread Corruption
As we witness more corruption, injustice, and sin around us, we shouldn’t lose hope. The Prophet ﷺ told us these times would come. We should strive to be among those who stay patient, who turn to Allah, who speak truth, and who show good character.
In a world of darkness, even a small light shines far.
May Allah keep our hearts firm upon His religion and protect us from evil.
Ameen.
